Carter studied at the Cleveland School of Art from 1923 to 1927, then spent
the following summer in Capri with Hans Hofmann.
From 1929 to 1937, he taught at the Cleveland Museum of Art
In 1938 Carter left his job as director of the Ohio regional WPA/FAP and
joined the teaching staff at Carnegie Institute. Since then he has been a
professor, a visiting lecturer, and an artist-in-residence at seven
universities..
His work continues to receive awards and is owned by many museums, including
the Whitney, the Metropolitan, the Fogg, the Corcoran, and the Cleveland Museum.
